Dossin Barracks > 1948-1975
1948 – 1975
At the end of WW II the Kazerne Dossin reverted once more to the Belgian State. At the end of 1948 the Belgian Army established a school for the Administratie van de Krijgsmacht (Administration of the Armed Forces). Originally this school only occupied one wing of the barracks.
Under the name “School der Kaders, Betaalmeesters en Secretarissen” the school was also called upon to function as an education center for reserve officers and non- commissioned officers (NCO’s) from the administration departments of the army. At the same time the school was assigned to give courses and training to hand picked NCO’s and secretaries.
In 1950 a training center for the finance department of the military was constituted. This center provide not only basic training but specialist courses for individual clerical staff, typists and support services. In order to be able to execute these demands fully new accommodation was sought. In July 1951, with the departure of the Dienst voor de Vereffening der Achterstallen, a department going back to WW II, the whole barracks could be taken over by the school and its affiliated organisations. In 1952 The Kazerne Delobbe (in the old Predikherenklooster) was vacated and the school also took over this building.
On 8th April 1952 the name was changed to “Centrum voor Administrative Dienst” (CAD) (Central Administration Department).

During the years 1949 to 1962 15.000 ordinary conscripts, 750 reserve officers,
5.000 reserve NCO’s, 700 regular officers, 8.000 regular NCO’s, and 150 undergraduates passed through the school.
On 3rd March 1975 the CAD moved to new premises at Majoor Housiau in Peutie. On 11th November 2005 a plaque was placed on the façade in remembrance of the many years that the kazerne served as a school for the administrative services of the army.
We would like to express our gratitude to the ‘Friends of the Administration’, the Stadsarchief Mechelen and the Beeldbank Mechelen (www.beeldbankmechelen.be).
